The tool is not a substitute for saying the hard thing yourself

Mick Cairn · 14 September 2026

Rehearsing a hard conversation with an AI assistant before you have it, a negotiation, a boundary, an apology, is one of the genuinely useful things this technology is good for. You can say the awkward version out loud, get pushback, try again, and walk into the real conversation less afraid of the first ten seconds. That is real, practical help, and it is exactly why a tool like the Negotiation Room exists.

There is a line worth being deliberate about, though. Rehearsing the conversation is not the same as outsourcing it. If the actual hard part, being present with another person while it happens, gets replaced rather than prepared for, something real was lost even if the words were technically said. The value was never just the sentence. It was you showing up to say it.

The same boundary applies more sharply to anything emotionally heavy. A tool can help you think something through, structure a hard decision, or hold space while you sort out what you actually feel. It is not a therapist, it does not know you, and it should never be treated as a substitute for real professional support when that is what a situation actually calls for. Use it to prepare. Do not let it replace the parts that were always supposed to be yours.

Preparation is the tool's job. Presence is still yours.

One useful thing a week
